Identity & Fragmentation, Deconstruction, Entanglement & Morphic Objects
In this recorded PowerPoint presentation I am discussing my ideas of what I am trying to articulate through my praxis as Artist/Researcher/Teacher during the Covid-19 Lockdown.
In the video I explain how Derrida's (1987) essay on 'restitution' and 'deconstruction' of two other academics' writings about a painting of old shoes by Vincent Van Gogh inspires me to use my own shoes as inspiration to explore identity. It is through that theoretical positioning that I started experimenting with my photograph montages which will culminate in my three video montage projects [See Video Montages & Projects] all concentrating on a different hermeneutical interpretation of footwear.

Fragmented Identities through a Framework of Footwear
My work addresses my explorations of Identity and Fragmentation. Using my background as both an art auctioneer and art historian, blending that with my ambitions to be an artist-educator, I explore the differing approaches to knowledge acquisition from the perspective of these disparate roles, using the multiple, shifting personalities of my various types of footwear. I attempt to express the objectification – the abstract concept of identity within a fashioned framework of footwear.
I have used photography and video montage to examine the different entangled layers, the embedded levels and the fragmented forms of identity. I have also conducted participatory exercises incorporating other people whose personal interpretations delineate their identities through their selected choice of footwear.
I use philosophical hermeneutics (Gadamer, et. al., 2004) and the radical hermeneutics of Derrida (1976) to explore both my pedagogical practice and my theatrical auctioneer performances.
All my work and the assorted areas of the website are divided into thirds. There are three types of photo imagery - still life, composite and blended. There are three video montages - performance, narrative and participatory explorations. These all speak to my three identifying roles - Artist/Researcher/Educator.

'Both art and the artist lack identity and define themselves only through their encounter with each other.'
